Two kits played together just outside the Cats of the Roaring Path nursery. They didn't know it, but they were being watched by the she-cat who gave birth to them. Neither of the kits, who were absorbed in acting out a historic battle they had just heard a story about, even knew who their mother was, let alone how much she loved them. They barely even knew they were related to each other, let alone the speckle-pelted she-cat who rested in the shadows across the camp.
Carsiforra watched her kits play with a feeling of incredible loneliness. She wished that she could just tell them that they were hers, and she cared about them, but the tradition of not knowing who your blood kin were ran too strongly among the Cats of the Roaring Path for her to dare break it. Some cats even took it to the point of never knowing the identity of your mate, although Carsiforra didn't like that idea at all. As the she-kit, in the role of a long-ago Great Cat of Iron, stalked her brother, their mother sighed and began to groom herself. Maybe someday she would be allowed to talk to her kits, but for now she would have to be content with watching them from afar.

Paristernist padded over to Carsiforra. He watched her gazing at the little kits. "They look just like you," he mewed quietly. "They're yours, aren't they?" He looked at the kits too, wishing he could talk to them. Kits were so much fun, and he missed being able to be around them.

"Don't you dare!" said Mistabella, who had been passing by, but stopped. "You know the rules." What is with some cats? she wondered. They're older than me, yet they don't pay attention to the rules.

Paristernist knew something was awry in what he had done, but he wasn't sure if the problem was with his behavior, or with the rules themselves. He covered his worry with a jaunty manner. "Mistabella, you really do need to relax a bit," he meowed easily. "The sun won't refuse to rise tomorrow just because a minor rule was bent."

"No- no- I think Mistabella might be right," meowed Carsiforra sadly. "I do have kits, but I think it would be better for them to never meet me. Perhaps this system is better, because kits will never carry their parents' shame... but I would love to be able to teach them myself." She gazed off into infinity, the reflections of her estranged kits shining in her eyes.

"I know what you mean. Hey, at least they know where their parents are. The oldest memory I have is living on the streets with my sister. No parents." said Mistabella, trying to cheer Carsifora up.

Carsiforra twitched her whiskers in a cat's smile, realizing what Mistabella was doing. "Yes. Thanks," she meowed. Abruptly changing the subject to one that was more comfortable, she added, "So, do you think there's any chance that the next hunting patrol will actually bring in enough prey to store some?" That was a running joke among the Cats of the Roaring Path. When they lived in their previous camp, some cat had come up with the idea of storing away food for leaf-bare. The problem was, no patrol had ever come back with enough prey for any to be stored!

"Not if I'm in it!" replied Mistabella with a "prrr" of amusement. It was no seacret that she was the worst hunter of all the cats of the roaring path.

Paristernist purred, too. It was nice to be able to talk about something harmless. In fact, it was plenty of fun! "Even if you aren't on it," he needled, "there will be more prey than they can catch. Every cat knows how hopeless it is to try and hunt!"

"Yes. You're right. But what else can we do?" she asked. "At least you can bring back something. Oh well, hunting is fun anyway." Mistabella relaxed a little and sat down.

Cresterflora was padding past. She caught sight of some other cats goofing around. "Is something interesting going on?" she meowed, wanting to get in on whatever they were doing.

"That's not the whole story," Paristernist explained seriously. "We're also talking about storing up some prey for winter."

Cresterflora's whiskers twitched as a purr of amusement started somewhere deep in her chest. Like all Cats of the Roaring Path, she knew that joke. "Oh, yes, of course!" she meowed through the growing purr.

The Great Cat of Iron walked past a group of murmering cats and said in a strong purrof nastiness" Paristernist ,Cresterflora and Carsiforra should go out in hunt...NOW!" he hissed. He stalked away and sat down next to Mistabella. "You need to go out and gathers some healing herbs."

"Yes. I'll do that now." said Mistabella nervously. Why does The Great Cat of Iron have to be so bossy? she wondered, hurrying off to go find those herbs.

Carsiforra felt somewhat offended, but followed Paristernist out to hunt.

"Sure." he meowed looking at Cassidina with a look of fear in his eyes. He hated the way she talked like that. It made him scared?
