Creamkit padded into the elders' den, dipping her head to its oldest inhabitant. "Could you tell me about names?" she asked. The elder stretched, and began, "Well, first there's the names of the Clans..."
Many, many moons ago, when the Thunderpath was just a dirt track and so long ago that the youngest cat who lived then has long since grown old and died, lived the first warriors. They, a collection of loners and kittypets, agreed to join together for protection. They followed the rutted earthen strip until finding a beautiful place with everything they needed to survive. They were searching for a place to sleep for the night when a bolt of lightning struck a tall tree in a ravine. Behind the place where it had been, they found a perfect camp for the new Clan, which they named LightningClan for the lightning bolt that had revealed the site for their camp. There, one cat emerged as a natural leader, appointed a second-in-command, found a cat with the talents necessary to heal others, and formed the first part of the warrior code. It worked very well for some seasons, until a faction of former rogues grew dissatisfied with Clan life. Instead of living in one Clan under this gentle rule, they chose to break away and live in harsher conditions and grow stronger. They chose the marshy ground across the Thunderpath as ideal for this purpose, and named their Clan DarknessClan, for the opposite of the Light. That was when a new part of the warrior code was added: the section about Clan loyalty. This worked fine for a while, until LightningClan was faced with a new problem: too many cats to live in their small camp. The only solution that they could find was to split off with two more Clans. The lightest, fastest cats found their way to the open moor and the rabbit hunting as WindClan named for the speed at which they run and the wind that streak through their territory, while a group composed mainly of former kittypets left to form RiverClan, this Clan, for the bountiful fishing in the territory by the river. Over time, the Clans grew further and further apart, until the rivalries of today sprang up. The most notable of these is Sunningrocks. Legend has it that LightningClan conceded Sunningrocks to the newly formed RiverClan so that they had all of the territory around the river. Later, some cat persuaded the leader that it was a bad idea to give up the area with the warm boulders, and they tried to claim it back. A major fight broke out between the Clans, and the bitter aftertaste of it never left. Around that time, some of the cats of the Clans died. Their spirits formed a Clan that would give the necessary trace of light to the cats still alive- StarClan.
The old cat folded her paws and rested her head on them. "I'm tired now. Come back some other time and I'll tell you about warrior names." "Oh, I will," promised Creamkit. "I will!"
